Dobama Theatre
About us | Dobama Theatre was founded in 1959 to premiere plays of consequence that were too risky to be produced by larger theatres in the Northeast Ohio area. Since that time, Dobama has produced Cleveland, Ohio, Regional, American and World Premieres of important plays like ANGELS IN AMERICA and HOW I LEARNED TO DRIVE. In 2014, Dobama became a full-time union theatre under the Actors' Equity Association, making a commitment to fair pay and treatment for artists. In 2019, Dobama was awarded the Kathryn V. Lamkey Award by the AEA for our commitment to Equity, Diversity and Inclusion both on and off the stage. Dobama produces the Marilyn Bianchi Kids' Playwriting Festival each year, where students in grades 1-12 participate in playwriting literacy workshops in schools and public libraries before being invited to submit original plays to the Festival in March. Select outstanding plays are fully produced on Dobama's stage each year in the festival weekend, the oldest event of its kind in the country. Dobama also hosts the Dobama Emerging Actors Program, a conservatory-level training intensive for high school and college-age actors, and the Playwrights' GYM, a local unit of professional playwrights. |
