Our mission | To preserve for the public an area reflecting the traditional environment of Indian Hill and its historical significance by preserving Greenacres in its current state of woodland and farmland; to encourage conservation and appreciation of nature by providing to the public, particularly children, the opportunity to study and enjoy plant and animal life in their natural settings; and to encourage appreciation of music and culture by providing facilities and an atmosphere that will encourage artists to display their talents for all age groups. |

Ways to help | Volunteer for VeggiesVolunteers for Veggies at the Greenacres location meets on Wednesday evenings at 6:30 during the growing season, usually mid-April through late October. Our garden of over 20 raised beds is located at the corner of Spooky Hollow Road and Loveland-Madeira Road in Indian Hill. We grow organic produce for the Freestore Foodbank. Our main crops are greens including collards, kale, mustard, Swiss chard, and turnip greens. We also grow tomatoes, peppers, squash, and garlic. This is a great opportunity to learn organic growing techniques in a beautiful, rural setting while serving the community. Our meetings are casual and our group is laid back. We always have a lot of fun.Our first meeting is on a Wednesday evening in March (date to be determined). We pot greens seedlings into cell packs. When they are big enough (sometime in April) we plant them in the garden, and our season gets underway.Nestbox CaretakersVolunteers are assigned a bluebird trail consisting of 7 to 10 nest boxes which need to be checked at least once a week and preferably twice a week. On each check, the volunteer records data about the nest box, such as number of eggs or nestlings. Simple maintenance tasks are also sometimes done at the nest box, such as cleaning. Bluebird trails are checked from mid-March to mid-August.Special Event VolunteersAssistance with special eventsEnvironmental CaretakersThe motivation behind Environmental Caretakers is to foster community involvement through education and service while improving the health of our natural ecosystems. As environmental stewards, volunteers will learn the benefits of native versus non-native, invasive flora species, understand the proper techniques concerning the removal of invasive plants, and gain an appreciation of Ohio’s native species, both plant and animal. As an added bonus, the efforts made by the Caretakers program improves the health and diversity of our natural environments at our educational sites for educators to show and teach to for our visiting students and adult guests. |
