Shelter - Meal Providing/Serving (Groups Only)

Meal Teams provide and serve breakfast, lunch or dinner at a regularly scheduled time (usually monthly) for residents and guests at our shelter, while engaging and building relationships with them.The meal can be prepared in our kitchen or brought in ready to serve.Responsibilities:- Provide a group leader who is the main contact and is responsible for recruiting, training and overseeing volunteers in the group- Provide and serve dinner for 110-120 people- Provide 6 to 20 volunteers each time- Commit to having volunteers sit and eat with our residents and guests, and to be intentional about building relationships.- Have dinner ready to serve at 7:00 pmWe provide plates, napkins, cups, silverware, pitchers for ice water and any cooking utensils you might need. All your group is responsible for is the meal.We recommend a hardy meal with a protein, a vegetable and one or two starch options. Our volunteer coordinator or our kitchen manager would be happy to give you recommendations.Availability is based on when there is an opening. Priority will be given to a group who is able to serve monthly. The group leader should submit an application and our volunteer coordinator will follow up with you.The suggested minimum age is 10 and every volunteer under 18 must be with an adult (18 or older) at all times.Minimum age: 10

Resume templates and training provided.Responsibilities:Utilize completed worksheets to develop resumes for participants involved in our job readiness program.· Email completed resume in Word Doc format to JobsPlus staff.· Maintain communication by email and phone with JobsPlus staff.·Optional: Meet with a JobsPlus participant and assist them in completing their resume worksheet that will be used to develop their resume.Qualifications:· Desire and passion to assist JobsPlus participants who are seeking employment by preparing their resume.·Excellent written communication skills.·Ability to send and receive email communication and develop Word documents.·Resourcefulness and ability to surf the web· Self motivated to work independently in a timely manner.Time Commitment:Approximately one hour per week.Minimum age: 18.

The Outlet

Class Instructor/Teacher: Lead a weekly class for the men staying at our homeless shelter, teaching life skills, bible studies, or creative expression classes.Classes can run for a period of time, such as 4 - 8 weeks, or can be on-going depending on the topic and instructor's preference. Days and times are somewhat flexible.Current class topics include nutrition, anger management, resume building, bible studies, financial counseling, life- skills, etc.Other desired classes include arts & crafts, painting, drawing, acting, singing, playing instruments, dancing, creative writing, as well as classes about depression and anxiety.Qualifications:· A heart for men who are struggling with homelessness, poverty, and other issues· Ability to set strong personal boundaries and abide by the City Gospel Mission volunteer guidelines and policy.Step 1: Please click on the "Apply Now" button and complete the volunteer interest form.Step 2: Our volunteer coordinator will follow up with you (usually within 3 business days) to further discuss this opportunity.Step 3: You'll observe a current class (or two) prior to starting.A background check is required and must be completed before starting. Recovery - Step Forward Running/Walking team

Step Forward is a program of City Gospel Mission's addiction recovery programs. Volunteers walk, run, and train with the men and women in our recovery programs, while building relationships, encouraging each other, and sharing God's love.Volunteers and recovery program participants train together for the Flying Pig Marathon and several other races and events throughout the year. The focus is on relationship-building, as well as experiencing achievement while setting and working as a team to exceed goals, understand the value of of physical fitness, and celebrate while training for and participating in The Flying Pig Marathon.Check out more information about Step Forward here:https://www.citygospelmission.org/step-forward/Qualifications: A heart for those who are struggling to overcome addictions, along with a desire to provide encouragement and a listening ear. Also, an enjoyment and appreciation of running and or walking.

Women's Recovery - Mentor

Be a friend and an encourager to a woman in our drug and alcohol recovery program while she goes through the recovery process. Continue the relationship and assist her in her recovery after the program through maintaining regular contact and accountability.Potential mentors must complete a volunteer application as well as a background check, and must be approved prior to being accepted as a mentor.Mentors are required to read the City Gospel Mission Statement of faith and sign an agreement that they will honor the Statement of Faith in his or her practices (this is part of the application process).Responsibilities:- Attend Mentor orientation/training- Develop relationships with participants in the drug and alcohol recovery program- Meet with your assigned participant for the agreed upon time frame (minimum of once a week during her recovery period).- Serve as an example and role model- Provide accountability- Work closely with Recovery Program Staff through phone contact, personal conferences and group meetings.- Assist the participant in reintegrating into community, employment, housing and church.Qualifications:-Must be female, at least 21, with a mature Christian faith and actively involved at a local church.- A heart and compassion for individuals who are struggling with addictions and other life controlling behavior- Good communication skills- Able to set strong personal boundaries and abide by the volunteer policies and guidelines (see attachment below).- Complete the online application, as well as a background check through Sterling Volunteers. (The background check will be emailed to you)- Please select "Sign Up" and "New Volunteer" to complete the application and begin the application process.The The Women's Recovery Director will follow up with you shortly after you submit your application to talk more about the role as well as next steps.
